When you get a tattoo it is a piece of body art. However, you are also initially getting a wound applied to your skin.
The first 48 hours are especially important, since it’s vital to keep your new ink covered, cleaned, and moisturised as it starts to heal. We’ll guide you through all the tattoo aftercare instructions you need to know, so you can have a smooth recovery time.
Remove your tattoo covering after 1-2 hours
Once our Artist is finished with your design, we will clean your tattoo, apply an anti-bacterial cream and cover your tattoo to prevent any bacteria from getting inside.
Our Artist will give you specific instructions on how long to keep this wrapping in place, however 1-2 hours is a good ballpark estimate.
Ensure you wash your hands thoroughly in warm water with an anti-bacterial soap before removing the wrapping, and every time before you clean or moisturise your tattoo.
Gently wash your new tattoo with gentle antibacterial soap.
After washing your hands thoroughly, scoop lukewarm water over your tattoo until the surface is moist. Then, delicately massage a gentle, anti-bacterial soap into the surface of the tattoo.
Cup more lukewarm water onto the skin to rinse off the anti-bacterial soap, and then gently blot the area with a paper towel. Do not use a towel or any other material such as tissues where fibres may come loose and enter the skin. You might see some ink come off as you clean your tattoo. Don’t worry as this is a normal part of the process.
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment to your tattoo.
Once your skin is dried off, take a tiny amount of mild tattoo lotion or anti-bacterial cream and apply it in a paper-thin layer over your skin. Again, ensure you wash your hands in warm water with an anti-bacterial soap prior to doing so.
Keeping the skin moisturised allows it to heal properly, however applying too much can interfere with the healing process. A little goes a long way.
After one week, any redness and any irritation will start to subside
By now, any excess ink will have risen from your skin’s surface and washed away.
Continue the wash and moisturise routine at least twice daily.
Scabs and skin will continue to flake. As tempting as it is, don’t peel at it. Let the dead skin fall off on its own.
Continue to moisturise daily and keep the area clean.
If the redness is largely unchanged since the previous week and accompanied by swelling, contact your Doctor or Artist. Your skin may be at risk of infection.
Once again, wash and moisturise! By now, you should be in the habit of doing this daily. This consistency will pay off; giving vibrancy back to skin dulled during the healing process.
Some exposure to the sun is okay. However if your tattoo has colour or white ink you might want to consider avoiding the sun for an extended period.
The lower layers of your tattoo may take a couple of months to heal. Sunscreen is your best friend in any season.
If you already have a daily skincare routine, make sure you add your fresh tattoo cream in the mix.
Continued moisturising over the next few months will keep your tattoo looking newer, for a much longer period.
Sunscreen is equally as important. Except you may want to apply it on every sunny day, not just the ones in summer.
